Types of Reverse Osmosis Membrane/RO Membrane

The three main indexes to measure the performance of reverse osmosis membrane elements are water production flux, desalination rate and membrane pressure drop, which are mainly characterized by specific feed water pressure.

At present, there are many reverse osmosis membranes sold on the market, and according to different focuses, the classification is not the same. Different brands are classified differently, and the types and models are different. Today, let’s talk about the classification of reverse osmosis membranes according to the material and the types of membrane element of the major brands.

Types of reverse osmosis membranes:

1.According to the type of membrane element, it can be divided into homogeneous membrane, asymmetric membrane and composite membrane.

2.According to the characteristics of the membrane elements, it can be divided into low pressure membrane, ultra-low pressure membrane, extreme ultra-low pressure membrane, low energy consumption membrane, ultra-low energy consumption membrane, high desalination rate membrane, ultra-high desalination membrane, high boron removal membrane, large flux membrane, anti-pollution membrane and so on.

3.According to the application of reverse osmosis membrane, it can also be divided into tap water membrane, brackish water membrane, seawater desalination membrane, semiconductor grade membrane, concentrated separation membrane, thermal disinfection membrane and so on.

4.According to its raw materials, it can also be divided into cellulose acetate membrane, polyamide membrane, composite membrane.

5.According to the membrane element size, it can be divided into small reverse osmosis membrane, 4040 membrane and 8040 membrane.

6.According to the structure, it can be divided into inorganic membrane, organic membrane, disc tube reverse osmosis membrane type/DTRO.

Classification of reverse osmosis membranes:

1.Cellulose acetate:

Cellulose acetate, also known as acetyl cellulose or cellulose acetate, usually uses cotton and wood as raw materials to make cellulose acetate through esterification and hydrolysis. With the passage of time, the desalination rate of this kind of membrane element will gradually decline, and the possibility of contamination is greater.

2.Polyamide:

Polyamides can be divided into aliphatic polyamides and aromatic polyamides. At present, aromatic polyamides are mainly used on the market, which has low requirements for PH value, but free chlorine can cause serious pollution to it.
3.Composite membrane:

Composite membrane is the most common reverse osmosis membrane on the market at present, mainly made of the above two materials, the surface layer of this reverse osmosis membrane is a dense shielding skin, which can effectively prevent and separate the salt, generally known as the desalting layer, the thickness is generally 50nm. Below is a strong porous layer, also known as the base membrane, and the bottom layer uses non-woven material as a support layer. The composite membrane perfectly solves the shortcomings of the above two materials, and has the advantages of high penetration effect, large water flux and greater use intensity.
