Softening Equipment Maintenance Guide

Water softening equipment, i.e., equipment that reduces water hardness, primarily removes calcium and magnesium ions from water. In simpler terms, it reduces water hardness. Its main functions include removing calcium and magnesium ions, activating water quality, sterilizing and inhibiting algae growth, preventing scale formation, and removing scale. It is widely applied in systems such as steam boilers, hot water boilers, heat exchangers, evaporative condensers, air conditioning units, and direct-fired absorption chillers to soften the feed water.

To get the best performance from your fully automatic water softening equipment, regular maintenance and timely repairs are essential. This also significantly extends its lifespan. To ensure optimal performance, daily upkeep and maintenance are crucial.

So, how should water softening treatment equipment be maintained?

1.Regular Salt Addition: Periodically add solid granular salt to the brine tank. Ensure the salt solution in the tank remains supersaturated. When adding salt, avoid spilling granules into the salt well to prevent salt bridging on the brine valve, which can block the brine draw line. Since solid salt contains impurities, significant amounts can settle at the tank bottom and clog the brine valve. Therefore, periodically clean out impurities from the brine tank bottom. Open the drain valve at the tank bottom and flush with clean water until no impurities flow out. The cleaning frequency depends on the impurity content of the solid salt used.

2.Stable Power Supply: Ensure stable input voltage and current to prevent damage to the electrical control device. Install a protective cover over the electrical control device to shield it from moisture and water ingress.

3.Annual Disassembly & Service: Disassemble the softener once a year. Clean impurities from the upper and lower distributors and the quartz sand support layer. Inspect the resin for loss and exchange capacity. Replace severely aged resin. Resin fouled by iron can be revived using a hydrochloric acid solution.

4.Wet Storage when Idle: When the ion exchanger is not in use, soak the resin in a salt solution. Ensure the resin temperature stays between 1°C and 45°C to prevent dehydration.

5.Check Injector & Line Seals: Periodically inspect the injector and brine draw line for air leaks, as leaks can affect regeneration efficiency.

6.Control Inlet Water Quality: Ensure the incoming water does not contain excessive impurities like silt and sediment. High impurity levels are detrimental to the control valve and shorten its lifespan.

The following tasks are essential for water softening equipment maintenance:

1.Preparation for Long-Term Shutdown: Before extended shutdown, fully regenerate the resin once to convert it to the sodium form for wet storage.

2.Summer Shutdown Care: If shut down during summer, flush the softener at least once a month. This prevents microbial growth inside the tank, which can cause resin to mold or clump. If mold is found, sterilize the resin.

3.Winter Shutdown Frost Protection: Implement freeze protection measures during winter shutdown. This prevents the water inside the resin from freezing, which could cause the resin beads to crack and break. Store the resin in a salt (sodium chloride) solution. The concentration of the salt solution should be prepared according to the ambient temperature conditions (higher concentration required for lower temperatures).
